Loud phone ringers

Sometimes for one reason or another, the volume of a standard phone just doesn't fulfill the needs of your environment. This may be due to machines at work in an area of a factory, workshop, or home, a very noisy office, or just plain old loss of hearing, whatever the case, there are many simple solutions readily available. Many of these solutions do not even need an engineer visit and in many cases can be purchased locally or ordered online at a very competitive price. It is worth noting that some loud phone ringers require mains power to function, whilst others operate just from your line / correctly wired telephone socket.

To help you make the right decision of what to buy, you may find the following sound-level diagram useful.

Please note that some extra loud bell ringers may effect broadband service performance on the same telephone line.

REN - Ring Equivalent Number

BT telephone tone caller

Probably the most readily available, the BT 4-tone caller II loud phone ringer offers a very simple installation and somewhat effective solution. Just fix it to a surface using screws & the mounting holes on the rear of the unit, and plug the unit into a telephone socket. Unlike some of the other options below the tone caller 2 does not incorporate an additional port/socket to connect a telephone, so you will need to purchase a double adaptor if you need to use a phone at the same location.  There is a volume controller wheel and a 4-position switch to change the tone of the sound alert generated. There are no specific sound levels published for this device, however, it is louder than the average standard phone & the tone selector options give good scope to find an appropriate setting for your needs. This unit is more suited to an internal domestic environment, but could also serve well in a medium noise level working area. 3-meter lead attached REN = 1

Typically you should expect to pay, including VAT, packaging & postage, something in the region of:- £15 from eBay, £18 from Dabs, £18 from RS, £21 from CPC

BT telephone bell ringer

Designed for an office or light commercial environment the BT ringer bell 50E has been around for quite a while. Its principal elements are two 50 mm diameter dome bells & a central gong, which can generate up 77dB. Like the tone caller 2, the ringer bell 50E loud phone ringer has no built-in socket to attach other phone line devices, so again a double adaptor is required should you need a phone from the same socket location. Whilst still available from many suppliers, It is worth noting that this product is listed as discontinued at the BT online shop. Rear mounting holes as well a 3-meter lead attached, REN = 1

Typically you should expect to pay, including VAT, packaging & postage, something in the region of:- £18 from RS, £26 from CPC

Doro ring plus loud telephone ringerThe Doro RingPlus is an extra loud phone ringer with a built-in flashing strobe light feature, this device takes a slightly different approach to sensing incoming calls. The RingPlus uses an external sensor that should be positioned beneath a working phone, this negates the requirement of an extra socket, double adaptor, or direct connection to the telephone line wiring. It has settings for both the loud ringer and strobe light. The sensor comes with a 5-metre connection lead and the unit itself can generate sound levels in the region of 91dB. Because of the unique way this sound alert device works, it's possible to adapt its use case, one example could be to attach it to a doorbell sounder. REN = 1, requires mains power.
